Positive Feedback
Combination of BI and Spreadsheet Functionality
Connor from Mango Mint loves the combination of BI capabilities within Excel-like functionality, which resolved issues he faced with Sigma:
"Yeah… I really like it. I'm impressed. Cause… I know the problems and like I've gone through trying to build something in Sigma and just totally whiffing, but when you put it together like this, like a combination of the BI power with Excel and then the data querying, this is exactly what you get. And, it's really cool…this is awesome."
Time-Saving Integration
William Li from Path Point finds that connecting directly to data sources within Equals is the most valuable part, as it saves time by reducing the need to switch between different tools:
"We've seen you guys have made it easier to use and especially having a connection to our data sources, I think it's like the most valuable part because as a lot of people work in data… moving between SQL and Python between notebooks and spreadsheets and all of that, it's, it can be very time consuming."
Enhanced Reporting and Automation
Sires from Workshop is pleased with the reporting capabilities, particularly the daily summaries and ARR momentum tracking:
"This was great super efficient … all looks great. This is all the level of reporting I would like and then that summary on a daily so you know what ARR we are at … you know in two weeks from now like where are we at ARR momentum throughout the month but yeah all of this looks really great."
Jeff from Belli appreciates automated weekly KPI reporting into Slack:
"I kind of like how it just kind of runs in the background and we'll post that into Slack. So that was a feature that I specifically liked."
Problem-Solving Capability
James Jin shares that Equals solves niche problems for finance and product marketing folks:
"And what you described in terms of your current customer base is really very niche and it solves a really good problem that a lot of finance folks or product marketing folks face."
Raj from Puffy notes that the integration and automation potential of Equals can reduce manual work in Excel:
"We get files from our manufacturers. Then we compare the orders received. Are we getting filled for the same orders? So, there is a lot of Excel work that is being done. So we want to automate that. And right now, using Google Sheets and Excel Sheets is pretty manual."
Flexibility and Adaptation
Connor emphasizes the need for a user-friendly reporting tool as they are responsible for all reporting tasks:
"I want something that I can report out of easy - because I'm doing all the reporting. The tools themselves, the online interface, has been very poor."
User Experience and Practicality
Connor is straight up enthusiastic about Equals and the gap it fills in the FP&A market:
"I love the concept. I didn't even know this was what I thought the world of FP&A was missing. And, it is so, speaks volumes to the product. I haven't even used it yet, but, this is just, it's really cool."
Ease of Setup
Kwun from Modash finds Equals easier to set up compared to Looker:
"The better side of Equals right now to me is that it's easier for me to set it up than Looker is."
Negative Feedback
User Experience and Usability
Complexity and User-Friendliness
Raj found Equals difficult to use initially and did not proceed because some Excel functions did not work as expected:
"I guess I've tried the tool probably six, seven months before. I've been searching for some kind of platform which works similar to Excel but better than Excel. I don't remember exactly, but I didn't proceed with that. Probably I felt too difficult to use at that point of time, or maybe I tried one of the Excel functions in that and it's not working."
A.Fontana from Radical Storage expressed concern about the user-friendliness of Equals for non-technical team members:
"Just because it doesn't look like super user friendly. I mean, from a non technical person."
Paul from Elijas finds the current data visualization tools visually overwhelming and not user-friendly:
"It's decent. I don't love all this like, you know, I have to, like it's some part of scrollable. It's like, it's very visually overwhelming still. I have to scroll a lot. There's a lot of white space where there shouldn't be and not enough where they should be."
Raj had trouble with lookup functions in Equals and needed assistance or demo videos to understand how to use them:
"And right now, I am stuck at lookup function. I understand it does not work exactly like in Excel. Whatever functions are there in Excel may not be there here. But I first tried for XLOOKUP, it didn't pop up, then I tried for VLOOKUP, I think it's not there. But there is some function relating to lookup. So, I would need some help probably in the following call, maybe to, or if there are some demo videos how to use, then it would be useful."
Caroline Rowell from Sea People was confused about how to use the dashboard feature to display data comparisons:
"so when if you go to add a cell say for example that we want our total expenses for this month or whatever so you can only do one cell. You can't do like, so I guess … if you wanted to see what the past three months burn is."
Amy Burgess from Hudu requested more intuitive navigation and filtering features similar to Excel within Equals:
"But this little filter version, in Excel, it's right here. And I click on this, and it shows me this. Got it. But I guess same, if you can think of any little things like that to show us that may seem obvious to you, but equals is different than Excel."
Documentation and Learning Curve
William Li points out that documentation issues and the complexity of data models make it difficult for users to understand and analyze data correctly:
"maybe the other part is like a documentation issue there are certain kind of like business context to some of our metrics that are quite not intuitive and I think some of that only it's well understood by a few folks because it takes time to like work with and contextualize."
Integration and Features
Data Integration and Functionality
A.Fontana is concerned about the lack of live data updates between Google Sheets and Equals:
"but then it's not live because it's where this is connected so but they don't see the they cannot see the output if they change the in google sheet if you change from 10 to 100 you see the result live no in this case no because they change it but if you cannot link you know also equals to this how could you see the result live you know what i mean"
Expert Support
Nick from Go Head Waters feels that the trial period should include analyst hours to better understand and build reports:
"Just clarify you mean basically a free trial, but then you guys actually like provide some analyst hours to build stuff for us."
Importing Existing Data
Juan Carlos Ojeda from Meta Financiera is concerned about the complexity of importing existing Excel sheets into Equals:
"Like for example, I have a sheet that I think is ideal for this already built out in Excel. Would I have to build it out again or is the import process fairly linear?"
Reporting and Dashboards
Understanding and Building Dashboards
Vignesh Mathivanan from Growfin needs help with building dashboards and is considering a proof of concept to test the product's capabilities:
"I have few dashboards in my mind how do i build it in In equals. That's still an open question. Do you suggest we doing a POC like sync in HubSpot, our HubSpot data, and we trying to create that dashboard together and then see if it works out for us or not do you do that or how do you do that exactly."
Pricing and Support
Pricing Concerns
Caroline Rowell mentions not knowing about additional fees for certain integrations like Google Analytics, which caused issues:
"Okay, cool. Okay, I didn't realize that it was an added fee. I'm sorry. I know that was the issue then because he was like trying to do it and it wouldn't."
A.Fontana finds the current pricing of $299 per connector expensive compared to a previous offer of $149 per connector:
"it's a bit expensive 299 per connector because the price that they share with me was 149 per connector."
Support and Training
Kwun is concerned about the ability to independently build workbooks in Equals without constant assistance:
"The major concern is like how I can get to know more about how to build a workbook in Equals because like down the road we cannot just keep asking Sam to build everything for us."
Opportunities for improvement
Customer/Prospect Requests and Suggestions
Product Features and Usability
Documentation and Examples
People requested more documentation and examples, such as one-pagers or Loom videos, to better understand how to use Equals:
"Maybe in the meantime even just if there's … one pager loom or like some other type of thing that's just like hey here's how to get it.. is i don't know where the pain is for marketing so just like hey go check this out see if this is useful."
Examples of use cases and demos from other companies were requested to serve as references:
"If you can share, let's say, some of the existing use cases of other companies, that would be great for us as well as a reference."
"Can you show me for example a I don't know you have a demo of a business plan just understand okay how do you input and change you mentioned that you're doing it I don't care about the numbers but just understand that you know the what is the out what is the process no if it's something that could be could also work for us or not."
User Interface and Experience
There is a need for a user-friendly interface similar to Excel and Google Sheets for ease of use:
"My thought is I'm familiar with in Excel and Google Sheets. So something that can do that inside the system, inside that system is where the interface is familiar would be extremely helpful."
Looking for better formatting options, the ability to resize rows and columns, and improved navigation similar to Excel:
"Some of the things that I would love to play around a little bit more is formatting. Like how much for like, How does the table behave? Is it just like purely like a spreadsheet? I don't know, formatting things. Like can you change sizes of rows and columns? Do you have any other formatting options?"
Integration and Automation
Improved integration capabilities with various systems like Snowflake, QuickBooks, and HubSpot are essential for seamless data handling:
"And the other thing I was thinking about too is like, as far as being able to pull the discrete systems in, maybe there's a reason to put like a snowflake or something like that, where we can push all the data into a common source."
"We use Pipedrive as our CRM. I forget if you guys connect to them. We use QuickBooks reporting as well. Cause I'll just dive in and pull up my QuickBooks reports, but the way that the reporting comes in now, it's not as accessible."
Collaborative and Interactive Features
The need for collaborative features like comment sections, annotations within cells, and collaborative editing was emphasized:
"Is there any note taking feature, commenting feature, kind of collaboration on that? Like, you know, obviously, so we don't need right back in the database, but like, you know, we may see a column and like, you know, want to flag it for someone or add a little note for ourselves."
"Yeah. Man, we used to really love pop SQL and then they, whatever they shut down or something. Yeah. But I loved like the collaborative, cause I would always like get stuck on like one row on like a 30 line query and then someone could just come in and like fix it for me, which is kind of nice. Yeah. So like that collaborative editing was really nice."
Options for users to easily filter and analyze data without relying on SQL were requested:
"Basically what we're looking for is you know like we both want to do kind of high level analytics so for example product usage metrics but then also want to be able to allow our team to self serve and self report you know as if everything was in intel spreadsheet. You know that they could easily just kind of you know filter down to the type of information and get whatever reports they or whatever raw data they need to or take the data wherever they want."
Advanced Functionalities
Improved capabilities for handling complex data manipulation and visualizations, such as dynamic date handling, cross-referencing, and embedded functions like VLOOKUP:
"Yeah, I guess and then to maybe one step further would be, you know, could you then change to last year, same month last year and see all this analysis but as of that snapshot of time, you know, something where it's a dynamic date that basically the report is running off of."
"So what I love in ThinkCell, you can like say, hey, I want a CAGR from like this bar to the other bar. And then you can like just drag and drop it. And it gives you this amazing arrow that like is embedded within the chart. I guess you don't have that, right? No. [...] I mean, if you do that, I think that would be game changer."
Customization and Flexibility
Some customers need highly customizable solutions to adapt to their specific operational models and needs:
"I think the one thing I would say is that there's a lot of customization per project. So I think I saw on your website that it has sort of the standard bridges for ARR, but I think sometimes we do cross sell, and then we also do migration sometimes because some of our companies are like, I don't know, like old companies where they go like from perpetual license to like SaaS and we have to map that out."
Support for Non-Technical Users
Features that assist non-technical users, such as query builders and guided experiences, can make the tool more accessible:
"I would be the primary user. I'm not comfortable with SQL, so I would prefer the query builder stuff."
Additional Needs and Preferences
Language Support
Supporting more languages, particularly Spanish, would be important for teams not fluent in English:
"So, you know, like most of us don't speak English fluently, right? So I would like for them, and they work mostly with Excel in Spanish. So, you know, I think in terms of formulas, in terms of where everything is, they could get used to it, but it would be a significant, you know, like barrier to our workflow at the beginning."
"Do you think you have somebody that speaks Spanish? Because in my team, like they are not as proficient in English."
Trial and Proof of Concept (PoC)
Various people expressed the need for trial periods to test the tool with their data before committing to a purchase:
"What about a trial to play around with? That's not what you're doing."
"In order to me to justify the value for buying equals, I would probably have to show a proof of concept [...] If I can take that to my CEO, then that's where the justification of value and the whole are we OK, shall we move forward with this will come up."
"I assume you guys have a trial period of some kind. We're a pretty small team, so I just would love to just like test it out for a little bit and see how it works with our data set and know how much like we might have to alter our data to like make it work nice in your guys' tool."
Ease of Data Cleaning and Connecting
Simplifying the data cleaning process and integration of UIDs across platforms were mentioned as areas needing improvement:
"So as far as cleaning the data, that's one challenge that I see with pretty much anything that we do and trying to have a good way to be able to basically take these different systems that generate their own UID and create a method that we can, you know, either be prompted to update as changes happen, because I think that's going to be important is basically getting a way that you can connect the UIDs across the different platforms to just one."
"So I think one thing that we'll have to address, which is I think how we clean the data. Maybe you've got a good technique for this. So let's just say we pull in our data from our sales funnel, right? When we pull that in, that's our sales team updating inside a discrete system. So, you know, oftentimes there's, you know, maybe they spell the company name a little bit different. Maybe it's Care Marketing and instead of Care Marketing LLC. So then you've got a name difference or a different UID the way that Go High Level is going to say, okay, well, this data instances, here's your UID. And then you go over to QuickBooks. And, you know, we put in sort of, care marketing LLC, and that also generates its own data instance."
Automating data normalization and cleanup tasks is crucial for teams working with tight turnarounds:
"I think like the product side of it, I think that would be kind of interesting. Cause like, I think we have such tight turnaround sometimes, like maybe like two days that like, if it's some like crazy deal, to like kind of like clean up the data real quick and like get it in a working order and like do all like their cuts and then insights."
Enhanced Reporting and Analytics
Folks want more efficient tools for creating and updating dashboards and analytics, reducing their reliance on developers or complex manual processes:
"Is the searchability or discovery in HubSpot typically painful here too? Yeah, it's not, very good, here."
"I was wondering if maybe with equals, We don't have to rely as much on Power BI developers."
Improved capabilities for dynamic and customizable reporting features, such as leaderboards and ARR tracking:
"we want to roll it out, we want to create leaderboards, we want to do different things. So I don't know if it's going to work, if all of those things are going to work with you guys, but, you know, there's always, you know, there's always spreadsheets next to it."
